The yellow garden eel is classified in the genus ''heteroconger'', this name was coined by [[Pieter Bleeker]] and it prefixes ''conger'' with ''hetero'', meaning different, because this genus was so different from the other conger genera Bleeker knew of. The [[Specific name (zoology)|specific name]], ''luteolus'', means "yellowish", an allusion to the bright yellow colour on the back in life, paler yellow when preserved.<ref name = ETYFish>{{cite web |url=https://etyfish.org/congridae/ |title=Family CONGRIDAE Kaup 1856 (Conger Eels) |author=Christopher Scharpf |date=23 May 2025 |access-date=4 July 2025 |work=The ETYFish Project Fish Name Etymology Database |publisher=Christopher Scharpf}}</ref> |
