Trump makes major move with security guarantees in Ukraine

President Donald Trump has caught world leaders by surprise after changing his position on offering U.S. security guarantees to Ukraine. According to multiple European officials, this recent outlook marks a major shift in U.S. policy.

The meeting​

Following his summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump told European leaders that the Russian ruler would not cease fighting during peace talks. The U.S. president said Putin demanded that Ukraine surrender territory in its eastern region in exchange for freezing the front line elsewhere. Trump also said Putin agreed that any peace deal would require Western troops in Ukraine to maintain stability, according to four officials.

Before the Anchorage summit, U.S. leaders informed European partners that Moscow was open to accepting a temporary ceasefire and engaging in a second round of talks, per several European sources. However, Trump later told European leaders from Air Force One that Putin planned to continue his aggression.

Policy shift​

Trump had earlier rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s requests, citing fears of U.S. entanglement in a foreign conflict. He also turned down European appeals to support the deployment of their troops to Ukraine as part of a potential peace agreement. European officials involved in the call reportedly claimed U.S. guarantees could help Zelensky make a deal if Russia negotiates sincerely.

Officials said Trump described security guarantees that would include direct commitments from the U.S. and military and financial support for Ukraine, backed by a group of willing Western countries. European leaders welcomed the move, stating, “We are clear that Ukraine must have ironclad security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.” The leaders of Germany, France, Britain, Poland, Italy, Finland and the European Union institutions added, “We welcome President Trump’s statement that the U.S. is prepared to give security guarantees.”
