:The greatest difficulty, in book or later treatments, is Jackie Bast. Her fate, as a former mistress of Henry and then of Leonard, with (in Edwardian terms) no money, no property and no position, is to be erased from the story on the death of Leonard. How shabby: if as widow (had she and Leonard indeed married), her prospects were dire enough. If as a loose woman, worse still. But her life course was of no consequence to the author and entirely unremarked.
