In 1885, royal Hawaiian siblings David Kawānanakoa, Jonah KΕ«hiō KalanianaΚ»ole and Edward KeliΚ»iahonui introduced surfing β€” then called surfboard swimming β€” to mainland U.S. when they took to the waves in Santa Cruz, Calif.

In 1885, royal Hawaiian brothers were studying at a military school in California. There, they introduced a sport known as "surfboard swimming." The Princes of Surf exhibit tells what happened next.
