In 1885, royal Hawaiian siblings David Kawฤnanakoa, Jonah Kลซhiล Kalanianaสปole and Edward Keliสปiahonui introduced surfing โ€” then called surfboard swimming โ€” to mainland U.S. when they took to the waves in Santa Cruz, Calif.

In 1885, royal Hawaiian brothers were studying at a military school in California. There, they introduced a sport known as "surfboard swimming." The Princes of Surf exhibit tells what happened next.
