Former President Joe Biden was scheduled to tour a Philadelphia shipyard in July 2023 β but plans to board a vessel were scrapped after the White House learned it involved βlots of steps,β according to newly released emails.

Documents obtained by Protect the Publicβs Trust through a Freedom of Information Act request show Department of Transportation staffers gathering details about Bidenβs visit to the Philly Shipyard. The shipyard had received a federal contract years prior to build a National Security Multi-Mission Vessel, but just days before the event, the White House reportedly pulled the plug on any plan for Biden to get on board.

During the Philly Shipyard visit, Biden greeted apprentices and attended a steel-cutting ceremony for an offshore wind vessel β but stayed off the ship. The visit came weeks after Biden fell during a commencement ceremony at the Air Force Academy in Colorado. Following that incident, he seemingly began regularly using the smaller staircase when boarding Air Force One. Just a week before his Philadelphia trip, Biden tripped again, this time on the short steps, while departing from Helsinki-Vantaan International Airport in Finland.

This wasnβt the first time concerns about stairs may have limited Bidenβs schedule. Former U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson alleged in his autobiography, Unleashed, that Biden was barred from boarding the HMS Prince of Wales prior to the 2021 G7 summit. βHis staff told us that he would not in fact be boarding our vast aircraft carrier β which we had proudly stationed in the bay β because it had so many steps; and we wondered what that meant about his physical fitness,β Johnson wrote, according to The Telegraph.
