== History ==

The building was designed in the [[modern architecture|modernist]] style by Jan Fryderyk Heurich. It was built between 1912 and 1917 in place of a [[morgue]] and cemetery chapel of the Child Jesus Hospital. The building became the headquarters of the Cooperative Associations Bank, which operated until 1946. Its façade was lied with copper metal sheets decorated with plant motives. Its walls also featured [[relief]]s by Jan Antoni Biernack, titled the ''Farm Work'', and at the top of front corners were installed large sculptures of eagles, made by Józef Zygmunt Otto.

The building was heavily damaged in 1944, during the [[Warsaw Uprising]]. At a square in front of the building functioned a provisional cemetery for the fallen insurgents. It was rebuilt between 1948 and 1950, and expanded towards Sienkiewicz Street, with the project designed by Barbara Brukalska. It became the provisional headquarters

Budynek został odbudowany w latach 1948–1950 i rozbudowany w stronę ul. Sienkiewicza według projektu Barbary Brukalskiej[2]. Stał się tymczasową siedzibą centrali Narodowego Banku Polskiego[7].

22 grudnia 1964 przed mieszczącym się w budynku III Oddziałem Narodowego Banku Polskiego miał miejsce spektakularny napad na konwój przewożący przedświąteczny utarg z Centralnego Domu Towarowego – jeden z największych tego typu napadów w historii PRL. Nieustaleni sprawcy zastrzelili dwóch strażników, a ich łupem padło ponad 1,3 mln złotych.

Współcześnie budynek jest m.in. siedzibą Krajowej Rady Spółdzielczej i Muzeum Historii Spółdzielczości w Polsce.

== Architechture ==

Autorem orłów wieńczących narożniki był Józef Zygmunt Otto[4], a reliefów Praca na roli Jan Antoni Biernacki[1]. Elewację obłożono okładziną z blach miedzianych o motywach roślinnych[1].
