Just four years earlier, a post office had been established here — if it were an actual community, it would definitely be mentioned. The absence of any reference in a comprehensive review of the township's history and localities demonstrates that it definitely wasn't a community at this point, and combined with the absence of later "it's a community" sources, we can conclude solidly that it was just a wide spot in the road where someone opened a post office. If we had a later source, e.g. from 1922 for the county's centenary (just making that up — I haven't consulted my Philby directory of US county histories), and it didn't mention Exchange, we might have room to believe that it was a long-before community that the editors forgot to write about or that they decided they didn't have room for, but since the establishment of a post office was pretty much always a high point in the history of a community, it's preposterous to imagine that they'd forget to mention the post office or the community if it really were one. After all, it's a dead-tree source with (as I already said) a comprehensive review of the township's history and localities, so its omission there is much more significant than its omission from online resources published over a century later.
