Why it’s so difficult to do business in Nigeria

With almost a decade of experience running a business focus on the Nigerian market and the foreign market, I have come to the conclusion that it’s about 3X more difficult doing business in Nigeria.

I used to think it was just policy or purchasing power but it’s ultimately culture. The Nigerian consumer behavior is so difficult to change, trust is really low and people just want instant gratification. Our culture at this point isn’t designed for long-term rewards.

For example, we ran a campaign where we created a system for more exposure for businesses but the business owners were so sluggish to adopt, even with clear ROI.

Mini influencers, not even the established ones are so ambitious (and sometimes unreasonable) with their ask that’s it’s almost impossible to collaborate with them.

On the other hand, what we’ve noticed with our businesses focused on the western market is quick adoption as long as the ROI is clear.

Has anyone had a similar experience? How did it go?
