McLaughlin grew up in a musical family in Des Moines, Iowa. He moved to Boston in 1992 to attend [[Berklee College of Music]], then later transferred to [[New England Conservatory of Music]], where he earned both B.M. and M.M. degrees, each in Jazz Performance, focusing on double bass, and earning both Honors and Distinction in Performance accolades for the M.M. degree.

In addition to his contributions to the Either/Orchestra as a bassist, he also contributed two compositions to their 2010 release, ''Mood Music for Time Travelers;'' they are βHistory Lessonβ and βThirty Fiveβ. His debut CD, ''Study of Light'', was released on Accurate Records in 2002, and then rereleased (digital only) by Altered Music Productions in 2020.
