Rick McLaughlin (born October 14, 1971) is an American bassist, composer, author, and music educator, whose work researching the music of Stevie Wonder was included in the 2024 podcast, ''The Wonder of Stevie'' (Higher Ground Media).

=== Early years and education ===
McLaughlin grew up in a musical family in Des Moines, Iowa. He moved to Boston in 1992 to attend [[Berklee College of Music]], then later transferred to [[New England Conservatory of Music]], where he earned both B.M. and M.M. degrees, each in Jazz Performance, focusing on double bass, and earning both Honors and Distinction in Performance accolades for the M.M. degree.

As a bassist, McLaughlin has performed and recorded with [[Mahmoud Ahmed]], [[Mulatu Astatke]], [[Grace Kelly (musician)|Grace Kelly]], [[Steve Lacy (saxophonist)|Steve Lacy]], [[Getatchew Mekurya]], [[Bob Moses (musician)|Bob Moses]] (also as co-producer), [[Danilo PΓ©rez|Danilo Perez]], and he has been the primary bassist in Grammy-nominated jazz ensemble, [[Either/Orchestra]] since 1998. In addition to his contributions to the Either/Orchestra as a bassist, he also contributed two compositions to their 2010 release, ''Mood Music for Time Travelers;'' they are β€œHistory Lesson” and β€œThirty Five”. His debut CD, ''Study of Light'', was released on Accurate Records in 2002, and then rereleased (digital only) by Altered Music Productions in 2020. He has performed on stages in four continents, including the [[Glastonbury Festival 2008|Glastonbury Festival]] in England, Ethiopian International Festival in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the [[Knitting Factory]], [[CBGB]] and [[Lincoln Center]] in New York City, the [[Chicago Jazz Festival]] and Chicago’s [[Green Mill Cocktail Lounge|Green Mill,]] and many others.

As an educator, McLaughlin was Assistant Chair of the Jazz Department for New England Conservatory of Music’s School of Preparatory and Continuing Education from 2005 through 2017. He has taught at Berklee College of Music in the Harmony and Jazz Composition Department since 2010, earning the rank of Professor in the fall of 2025. In 2015, McLaughlin began teaching a course he designed, ''The Music of Stevie Wonder'', which inspired his inclusion in Higher Ground Media's podcast, ''The Wonder of Stevie.''
