Two suspects have been arrested after a multi-agency team led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) dismantled a major illicit alcohol brewing network in Kisumu County.

The Tuesday raid in Pap Onditi, Bolo area, saw security officers destroy over 40,000 litres of contraband alcohol in a strike against the illegal trade.

The intelligence-led operation was conducted by NACADA in collaboration with National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and a specialised Administration Police unit.

The haul included 200 litres of ready-to-sell chang’aa, 5,000 litres of molasses used in production, and 35,000 litres of kangaraβ€”an illicit brew in its fermentation stage. More than 200 jerricans and drums were destroyed on-site to prevent the toxic substances from reaching the community.

The two arrested suspects, believed to be central to the operation, are being held at the Sondu Miriu Police Station pending interrogation and prosecution.

NACADA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Anthony Omerikwa, attributed the successful raid to the government’s new 100-day Rapid Results Initiative (RRI), spearheaded by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, to intensify the war against illicit alcohol and substance abuse.

β€œThis successful execution underscores our unwavering commitment, in full collaboration with all security agencies, to dismantle the networks that profit from poisoning our people,” Dr. Omerikwa said. β€œWe are sending a clear message that there will be no respite in this campaign. The 100-day clock is ticking, and we are committed to delivering rapid, tangible results to safeguard the health and social fabric of our nation.”

NACADA confirmed that further investigations are ongoing to unravel the supply chain and apprehend more individuals connected to the illicit trade in the region.
