Mary Trump, the estranged niece of President Donald Trump, has criticized her uncle’s move to review Smithsonian museums, warning that it poses a “unique threat” to the United States. The comments came as the White House begins a review of Smithsonian museums aimed at aligning exhibits with the Trump administration’s emphasis on “American exceptionalism,” Knewz.com has learned.

Mary Trump, who has been a vocal critic of the president, published her concerns in a Substack post recently, framing the administration’s review as part of a broader effort to reshape American institutions. “It is part of an overarching plan,” she wrote. “But this one, I think, carries a unique threat to our futures as an advanced country that cares about such things. We also need to remind people that the arts are the most important mirror of — and way into understanding — a society and a culture.” She compared the initiative to earlier disputes over science and medicine during her uncle’s presidency, calling it “just another assault on expertise.” She also accused the Trump administration of attempting to transform the Smithsonian museums “into agencies of propaganda,” writing, “The idea that anybody — including Donald — thinks that he, of all people, has any business going anywhere near our cultural institutions, that he of all people has the right to interfere in our ability to learn about ourselves and other people, is quite frankly grotesque to me.”
White House launches review of Smithsonian museums

The White House recently announced a review of multiple Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C., including the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. In a letter to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch, the Trump administration said that the review would focus on exhibition planning, curatorial process and public-facing content. “Our goal is not to interfere with the day-to-day operations of curators or staff, but rather to support a broader vision of excellence that highlights historically accurate, uplifting and inclusive portrayals of America’s heritage,” the letter read. The initiative follows a March executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” which directs cultural institutions to remove “improper ideology” from exhibitions.
White House defends the initiative

Stephen Miller, White House deputy chief of staff, defended the initiative in a post on X, writing, “The Smithsonian is supposed to be a global symbol of American strength, culture and prestige. Instead, the exhibits have clearly been taken over by leftwing activists who have used the Smithsonian as yet one platform to endlessly bash America and rewrite / erase our magnificent story. The Trump Administration will proudly and diligently restore the patriotic glory of America.” The administration has framed the review as a collaborative process intended to highlight “the people, principles and progress that define our nation.” Officials say the goal is to strengthen the Smithsonian’s role as “the world’s leading museum institution.”
Lawmakers voice sharp opposition to the review

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz wrote on X, “If you’re trying to erase history, you’re on the wrong side of it.” BY: MEGA
Lawmakers and state leaders have condemned the review as an effort to whitewash U.S. history. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz wrote on X, “If you’re trying to erase history, you’re on the wrong side of it.” U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts also weighed in, saying, “It is the impartial role and responsibility of the Smithsonian museums to ensure a full, accurate and resonant telling of American history – and Trump has no right to censor our history, ignore the systemic oppression of marginalized people, and attack our intellectual freedom. Much like his disgraceful rollbacks of diversity, equity and inclusion programs and his campaign to ban books, this action is yet another attempt to whitewash our shared history.”
