President Donald Trump recently repeated his claim that he is the βhighest polling Republican president in history,β a statement that does not align with most national polls. Knewz.com has learned that the remark came during a week when two national polls placed his overall approval rating below 50%.
Trumpβs claim stems from Republican support

Trump recently bragged about his polling numbers on Truth Social. By: MEGA
βWow! Highest polling Republican president in HISTORY! Thank you,β Trump recently wrote on Truth Social, although he did not cite a specific survey. Trumpβs reference may stem from a CNN analysis in July showing that 63% of Republican voters strongly approved of him five months into his second term. That figure was up from 53% at the same stage in his first term and, according to CNN analyst Harry Enten, surpassed other Republican presidents going back to Ronald Reagan. A separate Pew Research survey in 2023 found 37% of Republicans and Republican-leaning adults ranked Trump as the best GOP president of the past four decades, though Ronald Reagan still led with 41%.
National Ratings, however, tell a different story

Outside his party, Trumpβs approval ratings remain low. By: MEGA
Outside his party, Trumpβs approval ratings remain low. Gallup places Trumpβs average rating at 42% across both terms β tying with President Joe Biden and lower than any other president in that period. Recent polls underscore that weakness. A The Economist/YouGov survey gave Trump a net approval of -6, while Morning Consult put it at -12 and reported his approval had dipped to 45%, the lowest mark of his second term.
Tariff policies may have impacted Trumpβs approval

Trump began his second term with an approval rating of 52%. By: MEGA
Trump began his second term with an approval rating of 52%, according to Nate Silverβs polling average, but the figure turned negative by March. Disapproval now sits at 52% against 44% approval. Analysts have linked his summer slide to tariff policies that unsettled markets and raised consumer prices, though his ratings have stabilized in August. While Trump points to strong support within his party, broader surveys show his claim of record polling strength does not hold across the electorate.
Trump has a history of making inflated polling claims

Trump has made similar assertions before. By: MEGA
Trump has made similar assertions before. In 2018, he tweeted during his first term that he had the βhighest poll numbers in the history of the Republican Party.β Fact-checkers later found the statement inaccurate, as both George H.W. Bush and Dwight Eisenhower recorded stronger Republican approval ratings than that of Trump at similar points in office. Today, his numbers among Republicans are also slipping. YouGov data shows his approval among GOP voters and Republican-leaning independents has dropped from 92% in January to 83% recently.
