Residents in Siaya County have raised concerns over a disturbing rise in suspected cases of abductions and robberies targeting passengers along the Siaya-Bondo road.
Coordinator of the Siaya County Passenger Service Vehicle Union John Oloo reported multiple incidents in the past two weeks involving private vehicles disguised as legitimate transport.
Passengers are lured into these cars and robbed at gunpoint of valuables like cash, phones, and laptops.
He recounted a recent case where a staff member from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University was robbed after being forced into a private car en route to Bondo.
Oloo urged residents to exercise caution, avoid accepting rides from private vehicles, and use recognized passenger services for safety.
On his part Moses Osuma, a resident, shared a traumatic experience involving two women who were robbed, stripped, and abandoned roadside after being lured into a private car.
Community leaders are calling on security agencies, especially traffic police, to increase patrols along the Siaya-Bondo route to curb these crimes and swiftly apprehend the suspects.
So far, at least four people have fallen victim to these schemes.
