Schumer rips Trump for ‘selling out Ukraine’

After President Donald Trump’s potentially pivotal summit with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in Alaska concluded without a deal to end the war in Ukraine — something Trump has long promised to accomplish — the Senate’s top Democrat ripped into the commander in chief. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer didn’t hold back as he accused Trump of “selling out” Ukraine to an “authoritarian thug.”

Scathing message​

“Looks like once again Trump is selling out Ukraine and bowing down to dictator Putin,” the senator from New York wrote on X. “No Nobel Peace Prize for that,” Schumer added, referencing Trump’s long-standing wish to be honored with the prestigious award.

Rolling out the red carpet for Putin​

Schumer also accused Trump of letting Putin walk all over him at their meeting at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. “Instead of standing with Ukraine and our allies, Trump stood shoulder to shoulder with an autocrat that has terrorized the Ukrainian people and the globe for years,” Schumer wrote on X, noting, “It appears Trump handed Putin legitimacy, a global stage, zero accountability and got nothing in return.” The Senate minority leader added that his “fear is that this wasn’t diplomacy — it was just theater.”

Clinton’s surprising offer​

Trump has made it clear for years how much he thinks he deserves to win a Nobel Peace Prize. Longtime rival Hillary Clinton recently said she herself would nominate the president if he could get Putin to end the war Russia started in 2022 without Ukraine having to give up any territory — something Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has made it clear is off the table. Trump liked what Clinton had to say. “That was very nice,” he said. “I may have to start liking her again.”

Trump and Putin’s three-hour discussion in Alaska in August didn’t result in a ceasefire let alone a lasting solution for peace. But Trump still insisted the summit was “productive,” adding, “We didn’t get there, but we have a good chance.” He then told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that it’s up to Putin and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate an agreement to end the war.
