PS Oluga engages Community Health Promoters during visit to coast

Principal Secretary for the State Department for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga on Thursday was at the coast to assess the state of healthcare and engage frontline health workers.

Oluga made a stop at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) where, among others, he engaged Community Health Promoters (CHPs) who have been integral in driving Kenya’s primary healthcare delivery.

The PS commended the CHPs for their vital role in primary healthcare delivery under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) framework.

The CHPs are the backbone of the primary healthcare system, where they provide essential health services directly to households, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Dr. Oluga promised to work closely with the CHPs and support their activities in promoting primary healthcare in the country.

The PS also assessed ongoing improvements in specialized care, where he inspected key facilities including the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, the Paediatric Accident and Emergency Centre, the Newborn Unit, and the Cancer Radiotherapy Centre.

He said the centres represent major strides in strengthening specialized and critical care services for the coast region and beyond.

During the tour, Dr. Oluga was accompanied by Dr. Geraldine Kawira Munene who is the Director of Quality Assurance and Facility Outreach, Dr. Mohammed Hanif (CDH, Medical), Dr. Salma Swaleh (CDH, Public Health), and Dr. Shen Patta (CDG).
