The Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC) has issued a statement addressing complaints from convicted murderer Bryan Kohberger, who claims he is being taunted in prison, as well as the circulation of videos allegedly showing him inside his cell.

โ€œWe are aware of Kohbergerโ€™s complaints about what he considers taunting. Incarcerated individuals commonly communicate with each other in prison. Bryan Kohberger is housed alone in a cell, and IDOC security staff maintain a safe and orderly environment for all individuals in our custody,โ€ a spokesperson for the Idaho Department of Corrections said in a statement. The department did not elaborate on the nature of the alleged complaints. The response comes after video clips, purportedly showing Kohberger in his prison cell, were widely shared online.

The IDOC issued a follow-up statement acknowledging awareness of the footage and confirming that the matter was under investigation. โ€œWhile we cannot yet confirm the veracity of the videos, if verified, they are a clear violation of IDOC policy and the parties responsible will be held accountable, up to and including termination. We caution that some videos may be fake or AI-enhanced,โ€ the departmentโ€™s statement read in part. The IDOC further emphasized that staff had been reminded of the โ€œappropriate use of technology and social mediaโ€ in July. โ€œVideotaping and publicly sharing security footage is prohibited conduct and we will be reviewing all legal options, including criminal prosecution,โ€ the statement added.

Kohberger, 30, was sentenced in August to four consecutive life terms without parole for the 2022 murders of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. He pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and burglary. By admitting to the killings and waiving his right to appeal, he avoided the possibility of facing the death penalty.

Following his sentencing, Kohberger was transferred from Ada County Jail in Boise to the Idaho Maximum Security Institution near Kuna, a facility built to house the stateโ€™s โ€œmost dangerous and volatile criminals,โ€ according to an NBC report. Amid the controversy over the alleged cell videos, the Ada County Sheriffโ€™s Office issued its own statement, clarifying that the footage โ€œwas not recorded at and does not feature the Ada County Jail.โ€ Bill Thompson, the lead prosecutor in Kohbergerโ€™s case, also reflected on the outcome of the plea deal. โ€œWe made a proposal on our terms, not his,โ€ he explained. โ€œI donโ€™t know what was going through [his mind], what he wanted. One way or another, heโ€™s going to be in prison until he dies.โ€
