img>The Nigeria Police Force has condemned provocation against its officers in the cause of carrying out their lawful duties.
The police released a statement in reaction to a viral video of a civilian confronting a police officer in Lagos and accusing him of operating an illegal check point.
The NPF shared the video and wrote: βThe Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns this act of provocation against officers performing their lawful duty. Such disturbances are unacceptable as they are capable of undermining public safety. We urge citizens to respect security personnel and desist from any actions that obstruct their work.β

The video in question shows a uniformed police officer being confronted by a civilian in a car.
βBut you know this is an illegal check point, right? You know this is University of Lagos Road, Iβm very very right,β the civilian said to the police at the start of the video.
The officer told the man, βOga, you cannot tell us our work. Go, go to where youβre going.β
The man replied: βI have your name, I have your badge. You know you could lose your job, right?β
βYou can send our picture to IG,β the police officer replied. βListen, I come here in open cloth and everything, you can take it [picture] and send to IGβ.
The civilian asked the officer why heβs checking cars and he replied, βIβm checking because Iβm authorised to check.β
However, the man kept insisting that βthis is an illegal checkpointβ.
The officer warned the man, saying βYou may enter trouble for what youβre doing.β
But the man insisted, βI will not enter trouble. This is an illegal checkpoint.β
The man then asked the officer to βshow me your warrant, show me your ID card.β
The officer responded, βIf I want to show ID card, itβs not to someone like you. You donβt know what youre saying.β
βYou donβt know your job,β the civilian responded. βYou know you donβt know your job, right?β
