After a turbulent two-year absence from the National Super League (NSL), Mwatate United are officially backβand they mean business.
With a fresh vision, renewed energy, and a deep hunger to reclaim their status, head coach Martin Mutembei spearheads a total team rebuild with one clear goal: a top-five finish in the 2025-2026 season.
βWeβve got a strong management team and a clear plan,β said Mutembei. βThe focus is building a young, competitive side that can restore Mwatateβs name in the NSL.β
Mwatate United's return to the NSL hasn't come easy. In 2023, the club's spot in the second-tier league was controversially sold to Dimba Patriots by the then-chairman, the late James Okoyo. The move sparked outrage within the clubβs hierarchy, leading to a drawn-out court battle.
The fight went to the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) and eventually the High Court, where Mwatate United emerged victorious. After months of legal wrangling β including a standoff with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) over enforcement β justice finally prevailed.
Coach Mutembei, who previously led Kajiado FC in the NSL, has begun intensive talent trials, with an eye on young, hungry players ready to prove themselves on the big stage.
βWeβve done the initial trials, but we still have six spots to fill,β Mutembei revealed. βThere are a few players Iβve scouted who I believe will be key to our success this season.β
Club CEO Mwarabu Gamariel echoed the coachβs optimism, stating that Mwatate United had been preparing behind the scenes before the final legal ruling.
βWhen we first got word we were returning to the NSL, we didnβt wait. We started preparing our squad and sent them to various tournaments to keep them sharp,β Gamariel said. βNow, the focus shifts fully to the league.β
Mwatate United gave fans a taste of whatβs to come with back-to-back friendly wins over the weekend in Mombasa. They beat Mombasa United 3-1 and edged past Shanzu United 2-1, showing flashes of brilliance and strong teamwork.
The team will continue to call the Danson Mwanyumba Stadium in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County, their home fortress for the season.
