Kentucky Republican Representative Thomas Massie is facing a steep drop in support as new polling shows him vulnerable to a primary challenge fueled by a pro-Trump super PAC. According to an internal poll conducted by McLaughlin and Associates and shared by Donald Trump on his Truth Social account, Massieβs favorability rating has fallen from 54 percent in June to 43 percent. His unfavorability rating rose from 40 percent to 54 percent, while his overall job approval slipped from 52 percent to 39 percent.

The poll attributes this shift to an onslaught of advertising from MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting Trump that recently spent $800,000 on television ads against Massie after an earlier $1 million ad buy in his district. βMAGA Kentuckyβs advertising campaign has turned Thomas Massieβs polling numbers upside-down, leaving him exposed and extremely vulnerable in a Republican primary election for Congress,β the poll stated. Massieβs spokesperson dismissed the surveyβs credibility, claiming, βThis poll does not reflect reality in Kentuckyβs 4th district.β They also criticized MAGA Inc., saying, βMAGA Kentucky is not MAGA and not Kentucky. Itβs three socially liberal globalist billionaires who are upset Congressman Massie doesnβt vote for wars and foreign aid.β The spokesperson further discredited the pollster, remarking, βHe is well known for bad results, and is not the pollster the Trump team uses for serious polls.β
Massie vs. MAGA

Pollster John McLaughlin defended his firmβs record, telling the media, βWe were the only pollster in the 2016 and 2024 primary campaign, and our polls were very accurate.β He added, βMassie needs to stop voting with the Democrats and start voting with President Trump.β McLaughlin and Associates has been working with Trump since 2011 and has been described by The Hill as one of his βmost trusted pollsters.β For his 2024 general campaign, Trump relied on both McLaughlin and Fabrizio, Lee and Associates. The poll surveyed 500 likely Republican voters in Kentuckyβs 4th Congressional District between August 10 and 12. The district has been represented by Massie since 2013. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

Massie endorsed Trump in 2024 but later broke with him on issues including U.S. airstrikes on Iran and raising the debt ceiling. Earlier this year, Massie was one of just two House Republicans to vote against the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a cornerstone of Trumpβs second-term agenda. The move drew Trumpβs ire. He labeled Massie βlazy,β βdisingenuousβ and the βworst Republican congressman.β In June, Trump launched MAGA Inc. with the explicit goal of defeating Massie in the May 2026 Republican primary. He has since threatened to back a challenger to unseat him.

The poll also highlights a growing perception that Massie is out of step with Trump. In June, 49 percent of voters said he did not support Trump and his policies, compared to 42 percent who said he did. Now, 62 percent say he does not support Trump, with only 25 percent believing he does. βStanding with Democrats and voting against President Trumpβs tax cuts and policies has put Thomas Massie at odds with the Republican base,β the poll concluded. As a result, 53 percent of voters say they are now less likely to support Massie. His βre-elect scoreβ has dropped from 41 percent in June to 30 percent β well below the 40 percent threshold pollsters use to gauge incumbent vulnerability. The decline is even more pronounced among key Republican blocs, including conservatives (28 percent), pro-life voters (29 percent), evangelicals (27 percent), voters without college degrees (27 percent), and seniors (22 percent). Meanwhile, 57 percent of GOP voters said they would be more likely to support a Trump-endorsed challenger.
