Kenyaโs Harry Kappa is set to carry the nationโs hopes at the first-ever SBA Esports Cup scheduled for September 7, 2025 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Organized by IndexG Esports in partnership with SportsBiz Africa, the competition will act as the curtain-raiser to the SportsBiz Africa Forum 2025, which follows on September 9โ10.
Kappa, a standout player with Plug N Play Esports, will line up against seven of Africaโs finest gamers in high-stakes action on EA FC 25, played on PlayStation 5.
The continental showdown will feature competitors from Rwanda, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Sudan, all vying for a share of the $5,000 prize pool.
The format kicks off with a group stage before narrowing to the semi-finals and culminating in a grand finale, ensuring fans a dramatic showcase of Africaโs growing esports talent.
But the SBA Esports Cup is more than just a tournament, itโs a statement of intent. โEsports is no longer merely an entertainment activity. It is fast becoming a pillar of the modern sports economy,โ a SportsBiz Africa representative remarked.
IndexG Esports Chairman Ronny Lusigi stressed that the long-term vision is to establish a licensed African circuit sanctioned by EA Sports FC, creating global opportunities for players like Kappa.
With Rwandaโs proven record in staging major continental sporting events, the SBA Esports Cup could mark the dawn of a new era for esports in Africa.
