Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional resilience against future health crises with the launch of the IGAD Pandemic Preparedness and Response Initiative in Uganda.
Speaking at the Speke Munyonyo Resort Conference Centre during the official launch, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, said Kenya fully supports the programme, which seeks to bolster capacities in early detection, rapid response, and effective management of pandemics across the IGAD region.
βProactive preparation, early detection, and rapid regional collaboration save lives and protect economies. No country can do it alone. We must work together to safeguard our people,β she emphasized.
The new initiative will focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure, enhancing surveillance systems, fostering community engagement, and ensuring the availability of essential supplies and vaccines.
PS Muthoni noted that the programme aligns with Kenyaβs second National Action Plan for Health Security, which is currently being finalised, and is anchored in the countryβs Health Sector Strategic Plan, the Constitution, and the Bottom-up Transformation Agenda.
She stressed that pandemic preparedness is not only a government responsibility but a collective effort involving communities, the private sector, civil society, and international partners.
βKenya remains committed to transparency, accountability, and partnerships. Together, through solidarity and proactive action, we can build a healthier, more resilient IGAD region,β she said.
Cross-border cooperation was highlighted as a priority, particularly in Kenyaβs northern and western corridors, characterised by shared ecosystems, migrant populations, and trade flows. The PS said Kenya will coordinate with neighbouring IGAD states on joint surveillance, harmonised travel and trade guidance, and synchronised contingency planning.
Muthoni also expressed appreciation to development partners and organizations supporting the initiative, noting their collaboration is critical in turning the vision of a resilient health system into reality.
The Pandemic Preparedness and Response Initiative comes as IGAD countries seek to draw lessons from COVID-19 and other recent health emergencies, aiming to ensure that the region is better equipped to respond to future outbreaks.
