After a Philips Hue app update leaked a new Hue video doorbell in March, parent company Signify is making it official this week. The $169 Hue Secure video doorbell is arriving in October to complement Hue’s other Secure indoor and outdoor camera offerings.

The Hue Secure video doorbell looks much like any other smart doorbell on the market, with a candy bar shape and a large button for visitors to activate. It’s a wired doorbell, so you’ll need power at the front of your house instead of relying on an easier battery-powered doorbell installation.

Signify is using both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi options on the Hue doorbell, as well as a Zigbee radio to pair with Hue lights. You can configure the Hue doorbell to automatically turn on other Hue lights when someone approaches your front door, and it also comes with a plug-in chime that can act as a siren for the Hue security system. The chime is also a requirement as the Hue doorbell won’t work with any existing doorbell chime.

The Hue doorbell itself has a 2K image sensor with a fish-eye lens and a square aspect ratio. That’s better than the resolution available on Google’s Nest doorbells or even Blink’s buzzer, but it’s right in line with TP-Link’s Tapo D225 and Ring’s popular battery doorbell plus. Google is also rumored to be launching a 2K video doorbell next month.

The Hue doorbell will also work with Google Home and Samsung SmartThings, as well as inside the main Hue app. Like many other smart doorbells, you’ll get alerts when someone is at your door or if a package arrives, and there’s a two-way talk mode to greet guests or tell delivery drivers where to hide your package.

One way Signify is hoping it will stand out against the competition is with free video history for a full day. β€œWe’re going to be offering 24 hours of motion-activated video clips free for all Hue Secure products and existing users,” said George Yianni, CTO and founder of Philips Hue, in an interview with The Verge’s smart home expert Jennifer Pattison Tuohy. Previously, you had to buy a subscription for 30 or 60 days of recorded video, so this is a good improvement if you need a day’s worth.

Existing Hue security cameras are also being updated to work with the Apple Home app, but the doorbell won’t be compatible at launch. β€œWe are also looking at Matter, but decided not to wait,” Yianni said. Camera support for Matter is slated to arrive in the fall with Matter 1.5.

In October, Signify will also launch a new 2K wired camera in Europe, priced at €179,99 or €199.99 with a stand. The Hue-branded camera is an update to the original Hue security cameras from 2023 and will integrate into Hue Secure features like light and sound alarms. A camera update is arriving soon that will allow Hue cameras to recognize if a smoke alarm is going off and set lights to a smoke-penetrating red-light setting.
