History-Making My Father's Shadow Comes Home to Nigerian Cinemas on September 19

The historic Cannes-recognised Nigerian film My Father’s Shadow is coming home to Nigerian cinemas on September 19th!

It follows two young brothers, played by Godwin and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo and their estranged father, played by Ṓọpẹ́ DΓ¬rΓsΓΉ (Slow Horses, Gangs of London) on a one-day journey across Lagos against the backdrop of the June 1993 election crisis. The boys were discovered through a street casting initiative by the film’s Nigerian production company Fatherland. The film is a portrait of memory, identity, fatherhood and nationhood.

The feature debut of BAFTA-nominated director Akinola Davies Jr. was written by his Grammy-winning brother Wale Davies and co-written by Davies Jr.

It will begin its global cinema rollout in Nigeria. It’s the first Nigerian feature to be selected for the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival and was awarded a prestigious CamΓ©ra d’Or Special Mention. The film’s team hopes to encourage Nigerian creatives to be limitless in their vision. Its success shows homegrown stories can compete on the world stage without sacrificing their roots.
