Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run 2025 edition launched

Organisers have promised a top class Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run this year as the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Gold Tour event enters its third edition on December 6.

Speaking during the third edition launch at Chepkemel Dispensary Grounds in Turbo Sub County, Uasin Gishu County on Thursday, Patron Farouk Kibet promised an even grander event this year following successful previous editions.

Kibet said they are targeting to pull over 10,000 participants as the event continues to cement its status as a premier competition, following its elevation from bronze label status last September to a gold label event.

Themed β€œRun for Education,” the race highlights the critical role of education in athletes’ lives and Kibet, an aide to President William Ruto, assured of an even more impactful event in 2025.

β€œBy God's grace this year will be bigger and better. My dream has always been to educate as many students as possible. Last year the Great Chepsaita Cross Country sponsored worth Ksh 16 million and this year we want to give more than Ksh 20 million scholarships.

β€œWe also want to build more roads, connect more homes to power and clean water. The race has always been about nurturing future talents and we want to make it better for our young girls and boys. In local and international we want to compete with the world because in the end we want to build a strong society,” he said.

The gold label distinction requires organisers to meet stringent conditions, including media coverage, prize money, foreign competitors and adequate medical care β€”standards the organisers have vowed to keep.

β€œWe want a combination of education and running and this can only happen if people come together and build their homes. This is right where we are today. Of course we will also award 30 athletes in each of 12 races.

β€œI believe the way the chair has been saying that we need people to train hard. This year is going to be a tough race and we believe that our athletes, young people, want tough competition,” he added.

Kibet also cautioned athletes to run clean race devoid of energy enhancing drugs, noting that the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) will oversee testing during the race.

The race chairman Barnabas Korir said 2,000 athletes in each main races will participate, among them several athletes from other countries.

He said the course is already marked with slight changes from last year's one.
