Gender-Based Violence against men on the rise in Kirinyaga as three victims nurse injuries

Kirinyaga County is witnessing a worrying rise in cases of gender-based violence (GBV) targeting men, with three men currently nursing injuries after being attacked by their spouses.

According to Nominated MCA Lucy Njeri, many male victims suffer in silence due to stigma and the fear of humiliation, which prevents them from reporting such cases.

Njeri, a member of the Gender 42 Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence, revealed that one of the victims is receiving treatment at Kerugoya Level 5 Hospital after being stabbed nine times by his wife.

She noted that while Kirinyaga has recorded numerous cases of husbands being physically assaulted, most incidents never come to public attention.

Njeri notes that much focus has been placed on cases involving women and girls, yet men also endure violence from their spouses, unfortunately, due to stigma, many shy away from speaking out.

Njeri further disclosed that the technical committee has finalized its report, which will soon be handed over to President William Ruto. The report contains recommendations aimed at strengthening efforts to combat GBV and femicide across the country.
