CRITICAL THINKING

Nigeria as a country is slowly losing the ability to think and personally, I genuinely think it is due to a bad/outdated education system. The kind of nonsense I see on social media platforms from Nigerians, shows that we are slowly losing our ability to think logically.

When I look at the average Nigerian social media space, it does not engage thinking. It's either cruise or something distracting. Life is not meant to be taken too serious, but the Nigerian social media space seems like one that does not take life seriously.

Majority of us went to Uni or Poly or College of education. However, most Nigerians lack writing skills. When I mean writing skills, I mean the ability to sit down, think of a topic and how to conduct it. The ability to sit down and brainstorm over something that interest you, then think of how to write about it, is critical thinking.

Have you noticed that as a society, we are slowly shunning reading? A bulk of us all have phones but we hardly ever read something long. Majority of us focus on 1-2 mins skits than something mind challenging. Hence, we are slowly not evolving the potential of the brain.

If the mind is too exposed to pleasure, the logical part of the brain becomes dormant and hence, lags behind. That's why U see that majority of us can focus on something like Big Brother Naija but we cannot try to understand our communities and country in general. We simply do not ask questions.

The word "Why", is the most powerful word in mankind. That singular word opens countless doors.

Why is this like this? Why was this decision taken? Why didn't you do this? Why is he/she like this? Why is this culture this way?

WHY

This word carries so much weight that it makes one to think before uttering anything because it puts them on the spot. Unfortunately, Nigerians do not do it.

Imagine as a people, we ask this question to our oppressors, do you know you instantly put them on the spot? For example, question a BATist about something done by Tinubu. Automatically, you create a room for discussion and equally, a room for him/her to think.

If you aren't asking "Why", how then do you want to develop a society of thinkers who can articulate their thoughts in writing?

I look at Nigerians and it pains me that majority need influencers to think for them. We are waiting for people like VDM, Deji and few others, to do the thinking while we follow them for back. We have a long long way to go.

Until we solve this issue of critical thinking, politicians will continue to ride us as a people. Tinubu got illegitimately put into power. Nigerians did not ask questions. Instead we folded our hands and kept quiet. You did not question the law nor INEC about the entire electoral process. How then do you want to defend yourselves?

To the average agbero or BATist here, have you ever thought critically? Like how does supporting a specific candidate impact your life?

In my NYSC days in 2019, I saw a lady who is not a corper, take corper wear and form corper for polling unit as an agent. She returned with ₦100,000. I told her that before the week ends, that money will be useless and U will understand that you sold four (4) years of your life for a portion of money that a politician generated under a week (₦25,000 per year if you divide it into 4 places). She insulted me and said I was stupid. In less than a week, the money finished and she was back to square one lamenting.

This is an example of lack of critical thinking. You were given money to sell votes for peanuts. In less than a week, you returned to square one. Who gained and who lost?

This is how it is for agberos who steal ballot boxes. A politician pays you peanuts to steal ballot boxes or even cause issues during election. Once elections are over, that politician enters into power and creates policies that affects you. You begin to lament the economy is bad. However, some years ago, you caused issues on election day and stole ballots to assist a politician into forcing his way into power. Who is the fool now?

Like I said, we as a society lack critical thinking. We simply do without questioning nor even evaluate the impact what we are being told to do.

Because of this lack of critical thinking, Nigeria is an anyhow society. Almost everyone is virtually on autopilot and cannot think for themselves. We rely on social media to numb our mind, influencers to think for us (though some seem to be agents of the government to distract us or condition us) and ignore everything knowledge because we do not like to be enlightened.

Anyways, let me not write much. Nigerians hate reading, especially epistilogical (if such word exist) posts like mine here. When we are ready, we will seek knowledge, attain it and use it to save ourselves from those who oppress us. For now, lets remain dormant and go with the flow. After all, the only thing that goes with the flow is a dead fish that cannot think anymore.

Quite sad.
