A Brazilian judge on Saturday ordered yet more surveillance around the home of former president Jair Bolsonaro, days ahead of the verdict phase of his trial for allegedly planning a coup.

In a court document viewed by AFP, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered "inspections of the interior and trunk of all vehicles" leaving the luxury complex in Brasilia where the former president has been under house arrest since early August.

He also requested monitoring of the "exterior area of the residence... adjacent to neighboring homes," citing prison officials who said that "blind spots" not visible from the front present an escape risk.

De Moraes -- who is presiding over Bolsonaro's trial at the Supreme Federal Court -- had already ordered 24-hour police presence at the villa where Bolsonaro has been on house arrest since August 4.

The judge was acting on a request from Brazilian prosecutors, who pointed to revelations that Bolsonaro planned to seek asylum in Argentina last year as proof that the 70-year-old could seek to evade a possible lengthy jail term.

Bolsonaro, who ruled Brazil from 2019 to 2022, is on trial along with seven co-accused for allegedly plotting to illegally cling to power after losing elections to leftist Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The Supreme Court is expected to begin handing down its verdict in the case on Tuesday. The former army captain, who has the backing of US President Donald Trump, faces 40 years in prison if convicted.

On Friday, one of Bolsonaro's sons said his father was in distress.

"The old man is thin, has no desire to eat and continues facing endless bouts of hiccups and vomiting," Carlos Bolsonaro said on X.

The former head of state suffered similar symptoms in July linked to digestive problems stemming from a stab wound he received during a 2018 campaign event. The health issues led to medical tests in August that revealed he had recently suffered two bouts of pneumonia.
