Anxiety after Kenyans report the return of violent robberies in the Nairobi CBD

Anxiety has gripped Nairobians after an influx of reports of violent robberies, attacks and intimidation in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) flooded the internet.

Over the last one week, Kenyans have been taking to Tiktok to share their experiences at the hands of juvenile delinquents who, they say, have been following them around, intimidating them, robbing them and even threatening to stab or smear human faeces on them.

According to several victims, these youthful criminal gangs have been operating around the Hilton roundabout, down to the entirety of Tom Mboya Street with others camping several meters away from the Galitos restaurant, from where they launch their attacks or stealthily follow their victims.

Almost all of the people who have shared their experiences online claim that the criminals are mostly young boys who operate in gangs and are armed - some, it has been reported, are even threatening to hurl human faeces onto an uncooperative victim.

Popular Tiktok personality Mjaka Mfine is one of the Kenyans who have sounded an alarm on the criminal gangs, warning Kenyans to stay alert as they move around the Nairobi CBD especially after dusk.

"They are back!" she said in a now-viral Tiktok video. "The thieves who smear human faeces onto people are back. They are operating all across Nairobi City and they're following you from around the Galitos restaurant. They first approach you and threaten to smear faeces on you incase you don't follow their commands. You need to watch out. I've seen way too many videos lately talking about the menace."

Another female victim claimed that, as she made her way from the salon, and was crisscrossing Moi Avenue, in order to join Kimathi Street and walk into the street's KFC branch, some suspicious-looking boys followed her all along.

"I didn't even know that Kimathi street nowadays has no lights. At some point, my instincts told me to cross from Sarova Stanley to the other side. Looking back, I realised that I was being followed. I was so shaken. I quickly found a safe spot and called an Uber," she narrated.

The victim went on to narrate that, after sharing her experience with the Uber driver, he told her that that has been the trend across the CBD over the last several weeks.

"He even told me that a night guard stationed at the Galitos restaurant was recently stabbed as he attempted to protect a customer from these gangs," she added.

According to some other victims, these gangs of young men are posing as content creators with small cameras and sheepish smiles before suddenly turning into menacing rascals who, all of a sudden, brandish knifes and other blunt objects.

"It's not safe at all. Don't display your phones. Also, walk with someone or use another route. Stay alert. These criminals are out to kill people, not just to steal. Please be safe out there," Tiktok user Maimuna Abdinasir said.

Sheyii Given, yet another Tiktok user, wondered why no action was being taken yet these cases had been reported over the last two weeks.

"We don't know why nothing is being done yet all these cases have been reported. These gangs are using very unorthodox methods and are acting with alot of impunity. Don't walk alone past 7pm in the corners of the CBD," he cautioned.

On Wednesday, September 3, Nairobi County announced a joint crackdown with the National Police Service on the criminal elements after the surge in mugging incidents.

Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria made the announcement following widespread social media outcry and disturbing video testimonies from citizens who alleged to have fallen victim to robberies.
