Today while my 6th grade students were reading independently, a student flagged me down and said she was confused. She pointed out that a sentence didnβt have a period. She seemed proud to have found this βtypoβ. I showed her that there was another page to the story. She still looked perplexed. Not satisfied with that answer, she said, βBut the sentence still doesnβt have a periodβ. I explained thatβs because the sentence continues onto the next page. Her mind was absolutely blown by this. Has she never encountered a page turn mid-sentence?? Can I safely assume this student has had very little exposure to books?
