:Thanks for the question. I don't personally have a strong opinion on the inclusion criteria itself, but I don't think we should make single exceptions, otherwise the criteria would become redundant or confusing. If we want to include things like this, then we should modify the wording of the criteria accordingly. I can see why the current restriction is there; because without it, we could include all manner of very large buildings built for different purposes but that have been retrofitted as churches (of which the Mosque–Cathedral is one historical example; see also [[Talk:List of largest church buildings#Cordoba Cathedral|discussion above]]). |
:Some alternatives might be: |
:* Broadening the criteria to include something like "and buildings that have been substantially modified to serve as churches", but that might be vague enough to open the door to everything and thus bring us back to the same problem. |
:* Remove the criteria in this list so as to include any building serving as a church, then create one or more other list articles for buildings that are architecturally churches, such as [[basilica]] churches and so on. (Most of the buildings on this list, and what most people in the West think of as churches, are basilicas.) The downside might be that the distinction might be a little technical for readers. |
