:Hi @[[User:Mgolden|Mgolden]], the difference between the particle construction and the preposition construction has nothing to do with meaning. It solely has to do with grammar, specifically with the fact the particle is part of the verb, it is there even if the verb is used intransitively, and it can't be w-shifted, whereas the preposition is part of the noun phrase, it can only be there if the verb is transitive, and it can be w-shifted. The fact that the collocation completely changes the meaning of the underlying verb is what makes phrasal verbs so interesting (problematic if you're a learner), but it is not part of the definition of the subcategories.
