Jess' parents clearly state their view that playing football isn't appropriate for an Indian girl. And academics don't enter the picture here--Jess has already sat her A-levels, so football couldn't distract her from school now. (Of course, they expect her to study law, so maybe it would be a distraction then. Gurinder Chadha has claimed in a recent interview that ''Bend It Like Beckham '' "is the only film to be released in every country in the world, including North Korea." This assertion [https://www.theguardian.com/football/2025/jul/26/bend-it-like-beckham-film-emma-hayes-keira-knightley-football is now being repeated in ''The Guardian'':] however, I haven't been able to find any evidence that it has been released in every country, nor that no other film shares this achievement.
