Laurence Doherty also had a streak of five GS finals starting with Wimbledon 1903 and ending in Wimbledon 1905 (US open 1904 final was a w/o). [[User:Antipodenz|Antipodenz]] ([[User talk:Antipodenz|talk]]) 05:47, 4 July 2025 (UTC) |

:Well, he didn't show up for the event. That's why he is in the next chart of "Grand Slam tournaments non-consecutive streaks." [[User:Fyunck(click)|Fyunck(click)]] ([[User talk:Fyunck(click)|talk]]) 06:40, 4 July 2025 (UTC) |

:In this case the fact he didn't show up is irrelevant. If you enter a tournament and do not play, for whatever reason, the opponent wins by a walk over and either progresses or wins the tournament. In the period of the challenge round the winner from the previous year was automatically entered into the final as the defending champion the following year. Laurence Doherty was a finalist in the US National Championship of 1904 - he did not play and his opponent won by walkover and he was the runner up to the tournament. Doherty's home page on wikipedia records this. |

:I am glad you have brought up the issue of his presence in non-consecutive streaks. Doherty did not have five non-consecutive title wins due to the fact the did not win the 1904 US National Championships for which he was the defending champion and finalist in the Challenge Round. His actual record for non-consecutive titles is 2 - achieved 1905-06 Wimbledon. He should however feature in this group of tables having 7 non-consecutive final appearances (Wimbledon 1903 - Wimbledon 1907). On a related issue this group of tables is not treated the same as others in the article - otherwise if there are less than 10 names more are added e.g. for 'titles' there are only 7 people listed (6 with Laurence Doherty removed) so there should be others listed, for example, who have 3 non-consecutive titles. Same applies to Semifinals (8 people) and Quarterfinals (9 people). For 3 non-consecutive titles one such person is Norman Brookes (Wimbledon 1907 and 1914 and Australasian Open 1911). |

:There is confusion about what a non-consecutive streak means by the comment in this article stating "Player skipped one or more Grand Slam tournaments during his streak". The notation next to this states 'clarification needed'. I agree. I consider it should state: "Player did not enter one or more Grand Slam tournament/s during his streak. For Grand Slam champions during the Challenge Round era being an automatic finalist for the following year constitutes entry to the tournament." |

:If w/o's are somehow wished away when considering records it will have a huge impact on them. I accept that it seems rather odd that people who did not turn up to a tournament can 'lose' the tournament but that is the way the rules are and a consistent application of them is required.
