Near the end of 1949, property holders in the city suggested a new townsite to be lived in by Sanish and [[Van Hook, North Dakota|Van Hook]] residents, because the two towns were bound to be engulfed by the waters of the [[Lake Sakakawea]] project after construction of the [[Garrison Dam]]. After said proposal, the New Sanish Townsite was finished. In April 1953, plots of land were beginning to be sold, and that same spring the Sanish post office reopened in New Sanish. New Sanish had around 120 people living there now, and Old Sanish became submerged under the [[Lake Sakakawea|Sakakawea]].<ref name=":0" /> |
