Ruto-allied MPs blame 'selfish politics' for chaos in Mt. Kenya - Citizen Digital

Mount Kenya MPs allied to the government have condemned what they are calling reckless, selfish politics behind the recent wave of violence that rocked parts of Central Kenya.

Meeting in Naivasha on Thursday, the legislators under the Mount Kenya Parliamentary Caucus are now calling for full investigations into the recent violent demonstrations in the region that left scores dead and property worth millions destroyed. 

Days after the opposition accused the government of funding and planning the demonstrations that rocked various towns in Central Kenya, Members of Parliament allied to the government from the region have pushed back, sounding an alarm over what they described as politically-instigated violence that has left behind a trail of destruction, grief and fear.

"The violence and mayhem witnessed in parts of our region recently have been instigated by reckless, selfish politics. We note with utter disgust the attempted attacks on critical economic facilities in Mount Kenya," John Kiarie, MP Dagoretti South, noted. 

"These deplorable acts of arson and looting have destroyed businesses that our people rely on, complicating the problem of youth unemployment and discouraging much-needed investment in our region."

They insisted the mayhem seen in parts of Mount Kenya was not spontaneous, but planned and executed by individuals seeking to destabilize the country for personal or political gain.

"For goodness’ sake, why would anyone incite the burning of enterprises that employ our youth and feed our families? Such heinous sabotage only tears down our own house and future," Kiarie said.

They reiterated their commitment to unity and development, pledging to continue working with the national government to deliver jobs, lower the cost of living, and uplift communities across the Mountain region.

"We are determined to resist and defeat the toxic brand of politics that threatens to destroy the future we are building for our children and grandchildren. we recall with concern the development achievements of President Mwai Kibaki – a son of the Mountain and one of Africa’s most respected statesmen," he added. 

The MPs are now demanding swift and impartial investigations into the violence, urging authorities to arrest not just the perpetrators, but also the financiers and political instigators without exception.

"We demand thorough investigations into the chaos that led to loss of lives and destruction of property. those directly responsible for the violence must be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. moreover, the sponsors and orchestrators of this anarchy and violence must be unmasked and held accountable," the MP pointed out. 

They vowed to ensure that Mount Kenya receives its fair share of development and remains firmly anchored in the country’s economic and political growth.
