Fishermen at Kithengunga beach decry poor sanitation

Fishermen at Kithengunga Beach in Nyatike Sub-County have raised concerns over poor sanitation conditions at the site, calling on both the county and national governments to construct a proper latrine facility.

Beach Management Unit (BMU) chairperson Okoth Aguko said that there are no toilets at the beach, forcing fishermen to seek alternative sanitation options elsewhere.

He noted that the last latrine was funded by the Lake Victoria Environmental Management Program (LVEMP) over ten years ago, and it has since fallen into disrepair.

Aguko added that neither the national nor county government has built any new latrines at the beach in the past decade.

He stressed the urgent need for improved sanitation facilities to ensure the health and safety of fishermen and visitors alike.

Additionally, Aguko urged fishermen to refrain from defecating in the lake during their fishing expeditions.

He mentioned that the BMU has been working to persuade fishermen to adhere to higher sanitation standards, although a few still resort to defecating in the water while in the lake.
