US President Donald Trump has announced a massive 50% tariffs on India, further escalating Washington's trade war with New Delhi over its purchase of Russian oil. Trump on August 6 signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on India, which will come into effect later in September. This comes in addition to the previously announced 25% tariffs, taking the total to 50 per cent. This comes even as India's External Affairs Ministry slammed Trump for criticising New Delhi for its trade with Russia, even as Washington continues importing fertilisers and chemicals from Moscow. The MEA on Wednesday again reiterated that the action was "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable". As India stands its ground against Trump's double standards, it has two options — to negotiate a seemingly difficult trade deal with the US, or strategically diversify its trading partners.
