The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association national rugby 7s defending champions Bwake, have set sights on retaining their title ahead of this year's national school games in Kakamega County.
The seven-a-side team has issued a warning to their opponents, stating that they are ready to defend their crown at the upcoming championships scheduled for July 28 to August 3, 2025 in Western Kenya.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Bwake Boys rugby team head coach Mikisi Cleophas stated that the boys have undergone intense training and are highly motivated to qualify for the East Africa games.
"Mine is to warn our opponents that the boys have trained well and are ready not only to defend their national title, but also qualify for the East African games because we were there last year and the team wants to have the same experience again," Cleophas said.
Mikisi attributed his team’s success—having won every match from the zonal to the regional level—to the discipline his players have demonstrated.
Bwake have been drawn in Pool A alongside Kitondo, Marsabit Mixed, and Lenana. Mikisi expects tough competition from Lenana and Kitondo but remains confident that his team can overcome all their opponents.
"Our group is really tough, we expect a real test from Lenana and Kitondo. We played against Kitondo in 2023 and we know them well," the tactician added.
Pool B is arguably the group of death, headlined by Laiser Hill, a powerhouse in rugby circles. Musingu, buoyed by the home crowd advantage in Kakamega, will be eager to impress, while Bungoma and Gede are dark horses capable of pulling surprises.
Pool C features former giants Lenana School and the ever-improving Mpesa Foundation, whose structured program has seen them rise in school rugby. Yala and Bishop Baldachinno complete the group, both looking to cause major upsets.
Koyonzo headline Pool D. They face a tough group with St. Peters, Otieno Oyoo, and Alliance, each with their own rugby heritage and ambitions for the title.
