The Khmer Bleu (Blue Khmers) (Khmer: ខៀវខ្មែរ) was the term coined by Cambodian Head of State Prince Norodom Sihanouk to describe his right-wing political opponents during the Sangkum and Khmer Republic eras. Some key figures in the group was Prime Minister Lon Nol, Sisowath Sirik Matak, Cheng Heng, Lon Non, and Son Ngoc Thanh. This group carried out an attempted coup d'état, with Thai, American and South Vietnamese backing, against Sihanouk in the late 1950's, claiming he was supporting the "communization" of Cambodia. Several members (Sam Sary and Dap Chhuon) were subsequently targeted by Sihanouk's secret police. The Khmer Bleu strongly opposed the Pracheachon and Communist Party of Kampuchea (who were later coined "Khmer Rouge"). They eventually carried out the 1970 Cambodian coup d'état, and established the Khmer Republic. The Khmer Bleu-dominated government eventually lost to the Khmer Rouge in 1975, and several members or Cambodians associated with the group were either rounded up and executed by the new totalitarianist government the Khmer Rouge set up, or fled to Western countries (France, United States, etc). Many Cambodians who supported the Khmer Bleu would later join the Khmer People's National Liberation Front of former Prime Minister Son Sann in the 1980's during the Third Indochina War.
