  • Checkers Sixty60 has seen its online sales grow by 47.7 percent in the last year, Shoprite Group has reported.
  • It represents a decline in growth for the platform, that saw an 58.1 percent increase last year.
  • The decline is likely attributed to the rise of competitors like Pick n Pay ASAP! and Spar2U which continue to grow quickly.

In a fresh trading statement from the Shoprite Group, the South African retail giant reports that its online sales through its on-demand delivery platform Sixty60 have increased by 47.7 percent year on year heading into 29 June 2025, marking yet another increase in popularity for the platform.

Last year, it reported that Checkers Sixty60 increased its online sales by 58.1 percent in the year ended 30th June. While it is likely that the Shoprite delivery service is still outpacing competitors like Pick n Pay ASAP!, the drop in popularity is a sign that the space is getting tougher for the company to continue its dominance.

On Tuesday, Pick n Pay said that online sales through its similar ASAP! platform heading into 29th June 2025 rose to 33 percent, compared to the same period the year prior. Meanwhile Spar’s Spar2U platform exploded in popularity in 2024, seeing a massive 463 percent increase in online sales.

While Checkers continues to lead the market, rivals are playing a really competitive game of catch up.

Meanwhile Shoprite continues to its trend of successful supermarket chains across the country, seeing a sales growth of 9.5 percent for the segment that makes up nearly 85 percent of all the money it generates. The group is set to continue expanding despite the cost of living crisis being felt locally and internationally.

“We continue to expand our footprint as part of our omnichannel growth strategy,” the trading statement reads, “Designed to extend our reach in adjacent categories where we are currently under-represented.”

In South Africa alone, Shoprite opened 194 new main supermarkets, including 43 Shoprite stores, 38 Usave stories, 29 Checkers Stores and three Checkers Hypers. It also added 60 new Petshop Science stores, and 10 new Uniq Clothing outlets.

Sixty60 takes on Takealot for ecommerce dominance

In May, Shoprite Group introduced a new sales event called the Xtra Xtra Weekend sale, where up to 60 percent of items saw discounts in efforts to compete with wider ecommerce leaders like Takealot.

“With Xtra Xtra Weekend we are stepping firmly into the general merchandise e-commerce space. We’re competing at the highest level with the intent of becoming South Africa’s everyday store – not just for groceries, but for the full range of household essentials, delivered same day, in a 60-minute window, nationwide,” Ilze Bylos, Chief Marketing Officer at the Shoprite Group said at the time.
