Cameroon: 92-year-old Paul Biya Announces Presidential Bid For Eighth Term | FP Africa | N18G In a much-anticipated move, the world’s oldest head of state, Paul Biya, has confirmed his re-election bid. Cameroon’s 92-year-old President wants an eighth term in office. He has been ruling the country for nearly 43 years now. If he wins the October 12 election and gets another seven years in office, he will be nearly 100 by the time of his exit. Biya is the second-longest-serving African president after Equatorial Guinea’s President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. Biya came to power in 1982. In 2008, Cameroon’s parliament changed the country’s constitution, removing presidential term limits to allow Biya to remain in office indefinitely. Biya’s plans to fight the elections are troubling the opposition, which is joining forces to form a coalition against him.
