Residents of Baringo South and its environs have to wait longer for mortuary services to be available following the vandalisation of a facility which was about to be commissioned.
Criminals broke into the facility and stole body trays and power cables.
It was the only mortuary in Baringo South, which was to cater to Tiaty and Baringo South.
The facility remains deserted and bushy as those who lose loved ones have been forced to seek services in either Kabarnet, Ravine or Nakuru, incurring more costs.
The mortuary, which was constructed by Baringo county government, was aimed at bringing services closer to the people.
According to a public health officer at Marigat Subcounty Hospital, high demand for scrap metal in the town has made idle youths go to extremes and vandalise even mortuaries.
Elders condemned the act, terming it taboo.
The mortuary is is one of the many cases of infrastructure vandalism, with the other being at the Perkerra Irrigation Scheme, one of Kenya's oldest and most vital agricultural projects.
Vandals have been targeting equipment to later sell as scrap metal.
