In 2023, Prof David Maillu shocked Kenyans after they gave a detailed lecture on witchcraft.
The controversial address on witchcraft, issued at his Mathemboni home in Machakos, broke the internet, and left many conservatives scratching their heads.
A podium made of rough rock, from where he stood as he delivered his lecture stands in the periphery of the expansive compound, counting days.
“I stood right here, on this rock podium, as I gave a lecture on the subject of witchcraft,” says the 85-year-old author, sculptor – and president of African Spirituality.
Mathemboni – which sits right at the border of Machakos and Makueni receives many visitors; local and international.
A traditional meeting room, Thome, as it is known in Kamba, and located just adjacent to the main gate, has played host to many.
At the Thome, tea or porridge is served and pleasantries exchanged – before you are shown around.
There are many things to see at Mathemboni – like the sculptures of Kamba legendary leader Syokimau and President Donald Trump’s shit hole structure.
Then there are these seven flags, now beaten by the vagaries of harsh weather, each representing the seven colonial masters.
A wooden gun, a binocular made from rock, clay and mud, an axe and the bible, sit at the foot of the structure holding firm the seven flags.
Prof Maillu has authored over 80 books – and many more remain unpublished.
Among his most outstanding books is After 4:30, a book first released in the 1974. The book has recently been reissued.
Mailu opened up to Citizen Digital about his journey of life, his works, self-education, marriage and childhood.
And then there is the controversial subject around President Donald Trump’s Shithole statue he erected in his home.
