Kenyan Man Arrested for Opening His Own Police Station

KESSES, KENYA: On March 08, 2025, Collins Leitich, 35, from Asis Village in Uasin Gishu County, was arrested for opening a fake police station. He set it up in Cherus Centre, Kesses Sub-County, painting it with official police colors to fool people. Locals thought it was real until security teams busted him. The case, logged under OB04/08/03/2025 at Kamuyu Police Post, has him in custody now.

Kenyan Man Arrested for Opening His Own Police Station
Collins Leitich, alias Chepkulei, a resident of Asis Village in Ndugulu location, took it upon himself to establish a police patrol base at a building, and went as far as painting the structure in official police colours, creating the impression of a legitimate security post.

This isn’t just a Kenya thing. Across Africa, people have pulled similar stunts. In South Africa, a guy faked being a cop for three years, even becoming a detective, before escaping in 2015. In Ghana, a man got caught in 2024 taking a suspect to a real station in a fake uniform. In Zimbabwe, a 27-year-old was nabbed by a mob in 2021 for posing as an officer to extort cash. Leitich’s trick fits a wild patternβ€”over 1,000 thefts hit Uasin Gishu in 2024, and 80% of Kenyans are under 35, many losing trust in the real police.

Kenyans are stunned. With only the Inspector General allowed to make police stations official, Leitich’s move was bold. Why’d he do it? No one knows yetβ€”maybe power, maybe money. It’s a big deal in a country where 52 million people face rising crime due to the increasing cost of living and joblessness.
